Safe Surgery Saves Lives Checklist Action Series

The goal of the Safe Surgery Saves Lives (SSSL) Collective is to bring individuals together who are working on improving surgical safety in Canadian healthcare. The Checklist Action Series is the first program to be launched by the Collective. The Checklist Action Series is a 3 month virtual initiative for Canadian surgical programs, teams and individuals to assist with effective implementation of a surgical checklist.

What is the Collective?

Who should Join?

How to Join

The SSSL Collective is:

A group of interested people learning together for the purpose of improving surgical safety on a variety of surgical safety topics delivered through a variety of educational programs and customizable virtual learning activities.

The first topic within the Collective will be on checklist implementation in the Operating Room. Future topics could include Venous Thrombo-embolism, Surgical Site Infection and Intra-operative Medication Safety.

Participants can join the topics and programs that fit their organization’s needs and interests. The Collective will bring together leading best practices, experts, local clinicians and change agents to learn and share resources for supporting improvement.

The program will focus on seven key areas of challenge indentified by the front line teams:

      • Choosing a checklist and local adaptation processes
      • Engaging the OR surgical team
      • Modifying workflow for the surgical team
      • Measuring success of implementation
      • Patient engagement; what are the implications?
      • Implementing and spreading across institutions and large systems
      • Ultimate challenge of improving safety culture in the Operating Room
