Royal Inland Hospital Diabetes Management Team Wins 3M Health Care Award
The RIH Diabetes Management Team has won the prestigious 3M HIM Team Quality Award. This award, which recognizes three key elements – innovation, quality and teamwork, is given to teams who have created measurable benefits in their service and/or program. The objective of these awards is to recognize projects and/or programs in the field of Health Information Management that have created a significant, sustained change within an organization. The Diabetes Management Team clearly demonstrated the requirements when they worked together to develop a new process for ordering insulin in an acute care facility. This process has already been incorporated by most sites within the TCS, and is now being rolled out IH wide.

The Diabetes Management team was formed in late 2006 to investigate existing hospital insulin ordering processes. At the time, concerns about patient blood glucose control had been brought forward from the wards. This initiated the idea of moving towards a standardized form, with the goal of improving patient care.

The collaborative nature of this team was demonstrated in the fact that there was no clear leader or facilitator. Rather, at different stages, team members shared the leadership roles, always maintaining focus on the goal. The team consists of Dr. Maureen Clement, Co-chair of the IH Diabetes Health Management program, who pioneered the new order form; Dr. Iain Tynan, Diabetes Medical Director RIH; Jeannine Jubinville, Kathy Gallaher and Evelina Coschizza, Diabetes Education RNs; Stuart Wright, Pharmacist; Kim Winters, Pharmacy Professional Practice Leader; Brenda Nadeau, HIM/ Professional Practice Leader; Dawn Benwell, Coordinator—Nutrition and Diabetes Education; Carmen Bevan, Senior Diabetes Consultant/Pharmaceutical Rep; Cathy Thibault, Manager/RD; Dr. Alex Leung, GP, Jane Kitazaki, HIM/ Research Evaluator and Sheila Bermiller, Manager of Document Services.

Representatives of the team will receive the award at the Canadian Health Information Management Association Annual Conference on June 13th in Saskatoon. For more information see the website at www.echima.ca.
