Meeting Your Goals for Preventing Venous Thromboembolism (VTE)

This one-day workshop gave participants the opportunity to learn about BC's new focus on VTE prophylaxis, and showed them how they can lead their organization to excellence in this important health issue.

Topics covered included:

  • Reviewing the evidence and sharing strategies and tools for VTE prophylaxis, one of the most common and preventable hospital complications
  • Discovering resources to meet Accreditation Canada's Required Organizational Practice (ROP) for VTE prevention
  • Learning about BC's Clinical Care Management initiative, and finding ways to achieve goals and meet targets

Patient Voices Network is working with UBC's Division of Health Care Communication to provide community education workshops on building effective communication between patients, doctors, and health care professionals. “Talking with Your Doctor . . . and other Health Care Professionals” is a workshop that explores the kind of situations people experience when they ‘talk to their doc.’ It presents tips and a chance to try out some of the things that will build effective communication.

Sponsored by the BC Patient Safety & Quality Council, provincial access to all keynote speakers and special interest keynote speaker presentations from IHI's 22nd Annual National Forum will be available starting December 13, 2010.  These videos will be available on IHI TV for the next 5 years through IHI's website. The video format, similar to YouTube, is best watched from an individual workstation as the image may be grainy when blown up for group viewing.  Click here form information on the keynote speakers and their topics. To access the videos, please send an email to Kerianne Poulsen and provide the following information:

- Name of your organization

- Name and contact information of the person requesting access to the videos

- If more than one person will be watching the videos from your location, please indicate the number of people and if possible, their names.

The access code and instructions on how to access the videos will be forwarded to by email after confirming that your organization is based in BC.

Technological requirements:

  • Windows XP - SP2 or XP SP3, Windows Vista, Windows 7.
  • Internet browser: Internet Explorer 7 or higher recommended, Firefox 3 or higher.
  • x86 or x64 1.6-gigahertz (GHz) or higher processor with minimum of 512-MB of RAM.
  • Ability to play videos using Silverlight 4.0. If Silverlight 4.0 is not installed, you must have the ability to download and install Silverlight 4.0. Please contact your local IT department to ensure that Silverlight 4.0 is installed on the machine where you will be viewing the video.
  • Macintosh OS 10.4.11+ (Intel-based) only with  Firefox 3. Silverlight 4.0 works on this environment, but IHI does not directly support it.
  • Ability to receive industry standard streaming video from our Akamai partner.
  • Sound card with appropriate driver installed and tested.
  • May require firewall configurations and port 80 to be opened to allow Silverlight video playing, Akamai streaming video and Google analytics

Medication Reconciliation Summer School Workshop

June 17 - 18, 2010

This two-day Medication Reconciliation (Med Rec) Workshop was presented by the BC Patient Safety & Quality Council and Safer Healthcare Now!'s Western Node. Med Rec leaders, pharmacists, nurses, physicians, quality leaders and others responsible for medication reconciliation discussed and developed strategies on supporting and implementing Med Rec in a clinical setting.
